It has a large surface area, high mechanical hardness, unique pore size distribution, low density and chemical stability. Recommended filter grade carbon for aquarium water purification. This is a coal-based activated carbon. ---- Activated charcoal removes ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and inorganic salts (like sodium chloride) poorly. For these, other specialized resins are required. ----- Changing Schedule: The length of time before changing your charcoal will depend on your stocking level. A lightly stocked and lightly fed tank could go about 1 month or 2 before the carbon is changed. A heavily populated or highly fed aquarium may be best with carbon changes of every 2-4 weeks.
